Towards Promotion of Mental Faculties

          The first qualities of the mind that deserve development are grouped under ‘Observation’. Actually we notice something and ignore others, even of what we notice, observe very little. A general perception of an object is what we all usually carry away from a half attentive glance. However, a closer attention fixes its place, form, nature etc as distinct from its surroundings. And Concentration of the faculty of Observation gives all the knowledge that the five senses can gather about the object’s nature and properties. Those who use the sixth sense can also gather much that is hidden from the ordinary observer. A Scientist by investigation can also ascertain other facts open to minute’s observation. These are the component of the faculties of Observation, and it is obvious that its basis for development is Attention, which prefers to grow in the unconscious way, here needs guidance and curriculum.

          The ‘Memory’ and ‘Judgment’ are the next qualities that need to be called upon and encouraged similarly, by the ways and means of noting the similarities & differences, with proper care and daily practice. The memory will naturally be trained. Besides that, the Mental centre of comparison and contrast will be developed, while begin to observe as a habit the similarities of things and their differences, by a skilful leading by the scientific habit, attitude and fundamental facts of scientific knowledge proposition.

          The ‘Judgment’ should be trained accordingly when one consider to decide what is the right idea, appreciation, measurement, effects etc and what is wrong. At the beginning the Judgment and distinctions made can be delicate. But trust the Judgment without attachment to its result, the judgment will soon begin to respond to the calls made on it, clear itself and begin to judge correctly.

          The ‘Centre of Analogy’ is certain to develop, when we are engaged in Comparison & Contrasting. That is to draw analogies and argue from like to like, notice its limitations and errors, so that one trained to form the habit of correct analogy, which is an indispensable aid in the acquisition of knowledge.

          Apart from the faculty of direct reasoning, there is one important faculty of ‘Imagination’, which is divided into three functions. These are, forming mental images; power of creating thoughts, images & limitation; and the appreciation of the soul in things, beauty, charms, greatness, suggestiveness, the emotions.

          The Mental faculties should exercise on the things, after wards on use of ‘Words and Ideas’.  The absence of a fine sense for Words limits the fineness and truth of its operation, the foundation of literary and syntactical faculties. Now proceed to formalize the information, where the true Knowledge takes it base on things, by spontaneous curiosity and interest.
